Ideal for flexible guest rooms: the pull-out bed
Our current favorite is the pull-out bed by Andreas Janson. The wooden bed frame can be pushed together until it measures just 112 cm. It then becomes either a stylish seat or a practical shelf. When you have visitors, the wheeled bed frame can be extended to 210 cm in no time at all, so that even taller guests will feel comfortable staying overnight in your home. Andreas Janson delivers to Switzerland. Cost of pull-out bed: around 2,200 francs.
Air mattresses are so yesterday. Today it’s all about the “EZ bed”
The idea of an air mattress conjures up pictures of campsites, hours using a pump and back pain. But that’s a cliché: modern inflatable mattresses not only save space but are comfortable too. It’s best to choose a mattress that inflates itself thanks to an integrated pump, or one that is delivered with a rechargeable pump.
This type of mattress is available from around 60 francs, but it can be worth choosing a slightly more expensive model. The more luxurious versions often offer not only enough space for two, but also different degrees of hardness and a deflating mechanism.
One example is the “Queen” EZ-bed (pronounced “easy”). It is ready in three minutes, has three filling levels and comes with a silent second pump that refills air as and when necessary. Because no bed, no matter how good it is, remains fully inflated if your guest sleeps with the window open and the room temperature drops at night. “Queen” has a lying surface of 157x203 cm, weighs 27 kg and can support up to 200 kg.
Sleeping on biodegradable material
The cardboard bed 2.0 from “Room in a box” can be opened and closed again. It is 33 cm high, requires no slatted frame and is compatible with any mattress that is at least 15 cm thick. The cardboard bed is available in three sizes – S (width 80-100 cm), M (120-140 cm) and L (160-200 cm) – and comes in four natural colors. Although it is made of cardboard, it will not immediately disintegrate if your guest spills their morning coffee on it. It can support up to 1,000 kg per square meter. With an extension set it increases in length to 220 cm. The smallest version costs at least 100 francs, the largest at least 200 francs. Plus you can order your bed conveniently by post.
Accessories: a night light and a folding wardrobe
Now that you’ve carefully prepared a comfortable bed in a pleasant atmosphere for your guest, show your visitor by means of a few additional accessories and attentive details that you want them to feel at home.
A night light – not just for children
Have you ever struggled to locate the light switch when spending the night in a hotel or unfamiliar room, for example to work out how to get to the bathroom? Using a mobile phone flashlight is OK, but a discreet night light is even more useful for finding your way around in the dark – a light source that you can still switch off or put away yourself if you prefer. The Mini-Cloud from “A Little Lovely Company” is intended for children but will also appeal to adults. It works with three LR44 batteries and costs 19 francs.
The folding wardrobe
Any guest will be glad not to have to hang their blouse or shirt over the back of a chair. All you need is a wall hook for a few coat hangers. One example is Mario Zoller’s “Bite”, made in a wood workshop in Lucerne. It is available in three different colors for a price of 48 francs.
Appreciated by guests: an attentive host
It’s the little details that count and ensure a warm welcome for your guest – especially if you’re not actually at home when they arrive:
- a bottle of water and a glass, possibly a bedtime snack,
- an international adapter for the outlet or at least a plug to fit a USB cable,
- a “do not disturb” sign for the guest room door to avoid any embarrassing situations,
- a piece of paper with the Wi-Fi password,
- a shower towel and washcloth, so that it is clear which are for the guest’s use,
- information on when any pets might appear. Anyone who has ever experienced a cat jumping through an open window and landing on their stomach in the middle of the night knows how pleased they would have been if they had been warned in advance. The cat too, incidentally.
Conclusion: it doesn’t take much to create the perfect guest room.
A tidy room, a nice bed, a few accessories and some tender details – your guests will appreciate their perfect guest room. And their perfect host.
